It's Free and Easy!!!
About This Post
Synopsis: The U.S. Government (in a sense) may owe you money from unclaimed property (don't let the property part fool you). It isn't a guarantee but it's worth a try and its free! We will be searching by state.
Difficulty: Super easy.
Cost: Free and you may be paid!
The fluff (read the details or easy mode!)
What do they mean by "property"
Property is an implication of something you own. This doesn't always mean real estate. In the case of this post and what I'm going to be covering, real estate is not involved. Property in this case would be money, USD, currency, etc.Why and how you may be entitled to some money?
The why: So, the reason why you may be entitled to some money from the U.S. Government is due to an unclaimed property law available in most if not all states. This law makes sure that companies that owe you money that hasn't been claimed by you for at least three years, pay that money to the U.S. government or state controller for safe keeping. This money is held by the government for pretty much a life timeThe how: If you've worked for a previous employer who hasn't given you your last paycheck, your bank was bought out by another, or a company you've invested in via stocks has filed for bankruptcy, they may have sent your money to the state you were living in at the time.
The money that was given to the government for safe keeping isn't just limited to companies, banks, and stocks so rest assured, if you feel there is any reason why your past may owe you a little some some, then run the search and see if you find that money you were looking between the couch cushions. Trust me, you may find more than what you were expecting!
Well, how much will I get?
To be honest, you may not get anything. Don't let that discourage you though. Some examples: My wife found $1 and some change using this method, I found about $20, and although it may sound a little over the top, we had a friend's cousin find over $7,000 from an unclaimed company vs company lawsuit (I don't know all those details). The nice thing about this whole search for unclaimed property is that you can check each state you've lived in so your not just limited to where you currently live.
What are you waiting for! Let's get started!
Disclaimer: This post will only be covering the easiest way to look for lost money. There are other ways to look for money on https://www.usa.gov/unclaimed-money but it won't be covered in this post.
www.usa.gov/unclaimed-money |
Step 1 - find your state: The first thing you need to do is go to Unclaimed.org and search for your state. Now, if you don't trust the .org domain (the internet is a scary place... I know) you can always start with the government site https://www.usa.gov/unclaimed-money under "find unclaimed money" and "search by state" which will end up redirecting you back to the .org domain. Now, it isn't so bad to skip Unclaimed.org as the government website will show you other tips, tricks, and government websites to find lost money.
www.unclaimed.org |
Step 2 - click the state and get your search started: Simple, click on the correlating state and then "get started", "search for unclaimed property", etc.
www.unclaimed.org |
Step 3 - Run the search: This is where it can get tricky... but not really. Your going to want to select the right radio button (single selection button). Some of the state sites will ask you if you are an individual, business, or just ask for your property ID. In most cases, you would be "the individual.
Next, your search can be as minimal or maximal as you like. As suggested on the California website; for every search put a different variant of your name. This would include nick names, shorter names, family name, and surname/maiden name.
Step 4 - Check then click: Once you've received search results be sure to carefully check the name, address, and city/state/zip. If they all match up click on the ID Number link. There will be a summary of who the money is owed to, from whom it was owed from, and how much. If everything looks accurate, click "Claim This Property".
Step 5 - Collect your money: After clicking "Claim This Property", you'll be led to a final page where you will be entering in very personal information like SSN (social security number), current address, and your relation to the claim. Once your done your all set and you'll receive a check in he mail in about two weeks (usually less).
How I know this works
I've tried it. That's how I know it works. Also, it's a U.S. Government run benefit which is either ignored or people just don't know about it. To be honest, I didn't know about it till recently from a family friend of ours.
I highly encourage everyone do this! It's easy, simple, and risk free. It's the easiest way to receive pocket change or more!!!
