My Top 5 "Scary Movie" List For Kids!

It's that spooky time of year where we all love to be scary and we all love to get scared! With the pandemic, it is pretty hard for some of us to go on outings or even to trick or treat! Not to fear however, you can have plenty of fun for almost any age with this movie list.

It is REALLY tough to find spooky kid friendly movies and I would suggest to do what I did with my kids, test the waters. I'll make some suggestions on some starting ages but some children are more tolerant for spooky movies than others. The scale I've tipped these movies on are based on appropriateness and fun, not best to worst.

Start making your pop-corn, get everyone on that couch, and turn the lights off! Immerse yourself 5 days of movie night with my mostly kid friendly list!

1. The Hotel Transylvania Franchise (Rated PG) *Ages 5+

Sony Pictures Animation, Columbia Pictures
Happy Madison Productions
I would have to say this is not only one of my favorites but is fun for all ages! If your children are a little bit sensitive maybe wait till they're 5 or older. There are many references that maybe only older kids or even adults could understand.

Overall, the Hotel Transylvania franchise is an entertaining, goof-animated, light to non-scary roller coaster for all ages to enjoy!

Streaming service I would use to watch this? Youtube, Prime Video, VUDU, and Google Play

2. Coco (Rated PG) *Ages 4+

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Coco is one of those "happy tear jerkers" that the entire family can enjoy. I like this because it introduces your kids to a whole lot of culture and another holiday to enjoy, Dia De Los Muerte. Also, you know it's safe because Disney is behind it.

The movie is flat out fun! I would recommend maybe a good starting age for the movie would be 4 or 5 only because there is a few lightly stressful situations! In the end you'll still have that "aawwww" kind of happy!

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas (Rated PG) *Ages between 5 and 7+

Walt Disney Pictures

I started my kids on Nightmare Before Christmas just because I started early on it too; and look how I turned out! 🤔 Kidding aside, I think this movie is a good starting movie to introduce the kiddos into slightly spookier Halloween.

The singing and dancing also helps making scary monsters enjoyable and a whole lot less scary. The absolute best part about this movie? It can last without fail till Christmas! Can you say double holiday feature? With the scary factor of this movie I would recommend ages around 7 years old but I started my kiddos on this when they were 4 or 5.

4. The Addams Family (Rated PG) *Ages between 6 and 8+

I've grown up with the Addams ever since... well....forever! I remember watching the T.V. show on the weekends and as daytime yard sale entertainment on a little black and white low signal television. It was gold!

If you remember the good ol' days, don't judge this cover by its book. The animation is well versed as being creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky, and just overall ooky. 😜 Again, like Hotel Transylvania the characters are drawn silly which is a good introduction to making monsters not super scary.

I would recommend this movie to maybe an older crowd of between 6 and 8 just because there are a lot of older kid references and maybe some adult-ish humor. Also, there is a lot of attempted violence which call for a lot of "don't copy that" or "that's just pretend" to the younger crowd.

Streaming service I would use to watch this? Prime Video VUDU, Google Play, and Hulu

5. The Corpse Bride (Rated PG)

Warner Bros. Pictures
Another one of my favorite films. Corpse Bride very much like The Nightmare Before Christmas is artistic gold with a beautiful soundtrack.

The movie might be more suitable for an older audience but it does have some memorable whimsical parts that separate itself from some of the more serious moments. I feel it is a little more macabre and scary with less light on making scary monsters goofy but, they do have their fun moments.

I would say a good starting age for this movie would be between 6 and 8 due to scare factor and just understanding what is going on in the film.

BONUS

When the kids go to sleep Halloween night or even if they're peeking around the corner, I have a bonus movie for adults and parents! It isn't your typical horror film. Prepare to be entertained with horror comedy and somewhat safe for kids but I'll let you be the judge of that and I purposely made this a run on sentence ... Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks' ...

*BONUS* Young Frankenstein! Sorry FrankenSTEEN! *BONUS* (Rated PG) *Lets save this one for the Teens+ 😉

If you haven't seen it before it is a Wilder ride! This is an older slapstick film parody of the original Frankenstein film and book.

There is a lot of subtle adult references and some light suggestive themes, but all for the sake of comedy. For a younger audience who wouldn't understand this it might be ok but, there are also a few scary parts.

As one adult to another, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU WATCH THIS MOVIE!!! It's so funny, it's scary!

Streaming service I would use to watch this? HULU and Starz
