A Covid-19 New Years

Keeping New Years fun during "COVID time"

It's difficult to think about being grateful or happy during New Year celebrations when there's a pandemic going on. With the stress of social distancing, naysayers, government turmoil, and anything else that 2020 decides to rain down on us, IT ...IS ...REALLY ...HARD! I couldn't agree more! But, dig deeper and pat yourself on the back because we made it. The human race continues to survive up to 2021 and as much as we think the world is at its end, it's still spinning and we're still kicking.

So, with the ailments of 2020 how do we celebrate? How do we have fun safely? Hopefully I can give a few good ideas.

1. The Rose Parade is cancelled 😭

The Rose Parade is cancelled?!?!? Well, sort of. They are still planning to have a T.V. special which sounds different and exciting. So far a lot of virtual T.V. specials, due to the pandemic, have been pretty nice and include fun activities like sing-a-longs. To find out more about it check out this article from the L.A. Times.

Here's an alternative that might be fun for the kids. Make your own float, parade, and televise it on YouTube or Zoom with friends and family. So gather all those Amazon boxes that have been piling up (you know you have them) and bust out those crayons, paint and markers!

2. The New York Apple is still going to drop

With or without you, there is no way to stop time and the NY apple (ball) will still drop. Although time square will not be open to the public, the official Times Square website declares that they will have a wonderful virtual new years special with live performances and count down.

3. Organize some fun

Take some initiative with your family and friends and organize some nice virtual fun! There is a lot that can be done in aspects of entertainment and communication. Here are a few ideas.

  1. Communication: In this day and age you have Zoom, Google Hangouts, Facebook messenger, Apple's facetime, and more! All of which can probably support your entire family and then some! You can also keep it simple and do a conference call.
  2. Games: I mean, you don't have to, but this can help kill time before the countdown. I know for a fact Facebook messenger has a lot of fun and simple games that everyone can participate with. Virtually a few more ideas would be Tabletop Simulator or Jack box games for traditional board/card games. Another gaming solution would be anything you can play over the net via console or personal computer.
  3. Watch a movie: Some of the communication options provided can allow you to watch movies together as a group. Youtube can also easily provide this, as well. This might be fun because you can hear your friends or family's commentary throughout the film haha 🤣.

Think of the bright side of a non-traditional New Years

Think positive! If you were planning to go to the New York ball drop or the Rose Parade, you're avoiding the hassle, terrible parking, and frigid cold! Hosting a party isn't very affordable, messy, and you don't need to worry about everyone's ride home, or lack thereof 😉.

So this New Years, pat yourself on the back for surviving the apocalypse, saving money, and not stressing out about being entertained or entertaining others.
