Making Pokémon A Real Life Experience!

It sounds ridiculous and kind of absurd doesn't it? In a day and age, especially when most children are stuck at home, maybe not. There are a lot of things in our lives, from gadgets to animals, that we can associate to the cartoon and game Pokémon. The best part about this, is that it's fun for the kids and a true learning experience! I'll throw out some ideas for you and your children to introduce a real life learning Pokémon experience and adventure.

First Step: Getting started, Pokémon tools!

Every Pokémon needs tools to go on their adventure. They needs tools for documentation and to catch them all! Little known fact, most of us have all these tools right at home! Here's what you'll need to get started.

Pokédex

The most important tool for every Pokémon trainer is a Pokédex. For those who don't know, a Pokédex is a device that tells you:
  1. What a Pokémon does
  2. Where it lives
  3. It's attacks
  4. What it eats
  5. And More!
It is a Pokémon encyclopedia essentially. So how do I get this? It's your cell phone or any device connected to your WiFi.

Digital Poké Ball

In the game, you catch Pokémon by throwing a ball at it, which zaps it inside making the creature yours. Generally, in a real life situation you don't want to throw objects on innocent little animals. Try to persuade your child to take a picture with a cell phone or tablet instead. You not only "capture" the "Pokémon", but you now have it for life!

I'm not one for catching live animals but there are a few ideas that work around this. I would not recommend trying to catch mammals as they often carry diseases or birds as they're fragile. There are bug Pokémon however which are mostly harmless and can be fun to catch. Maybe check out these options (they may not be Poké balls but a nice story will work out:

You can also go to the pet store and buy a pet! With permission, I'm sure you can let the pet store owner know what you're doing and take some pictures as well if your child is too young for pets.

Second Step: Go on the adventure!

You're now ready to go on your Pokémon adventure! For fun you can play some Pokémon music on your cell phone. This works better outside as you should hope not to find reptiles, bugs, rodents, or any undesirable animals in your house unless you paid for them 🤣.

Where to find Pokémon.

Anywhere. Rose bushes attract lizards and bugs, dark cooler areas attract spiders, quiet areas and parks have some rodents, and just about anywhere has birds. So really, anything goes. There are also plant Pokémon in all shapes and sizes, so feel free to use some imagination and "catch" those!

Let's catch them all!

Put your child behind the wheel. Give them your phone if you trust they can handle it well and have them look for and take pictures of critters. To look up information on an animal, or in Pokémon, look up the Pokémon on the Pokédex I would suggest using Bing.com on your phone. There is an option to take a picture using their browser which compares the image to several different images and works well in identifying the animal. Your Pokémon team can learn all sorts of things about what you are taking a picture of. If you're not looking up enough about the animal or plant, take the initiative to ask your child if they would like to look up the "Pokémon" on the "Pokédex".

Something to keep in mind.

Have fun. Don't make it a chore. Don't force your child to look something up on the cellphone Pokédex if they don't want to. They are still getting a bonding and educational experience viewing animals and doing a little photography. Also, the best part is that they're outside and having fun which is healthy for physical and mental health!

Here are some Pokémon my daughters and I have caught!
