Can't get your kid to maintenance? Try some of these tips! (Quick Post)
Self maintenance, even for adults, can be a difficult task sometimes. Life gets in the way, we forget with our busy lives, or we're just too tired or lazy to do a specific task. We try to convince ourselves that it can wait till later but, sometimes, it never happens and turns to procrastination.
Here's the problem, our children see this and they copy it! They copy our actions, use our excuses, and despite being little balls of perpetual energy, the throw on a theatrical play about how tired they are, like we do. Here's a few tips to not only help your child build a routine and good maintenance habits, but to also provide an opportunity to promote some self-improvement!

Whether we like it or not, THEY are watching! It sounds scary right? That's because it is scary! These tiny humans, our children, are watching every single move we do! Like the famous phrase "monkey see, monkey do" there is a very strong truth to this when it comes down to parenting. Our children look up to us and at young ages, they essentially want to be come us.
So, with this in mind, if we want them to build good habits and routines, we need to lead by example. We need to be a team and do everything together. Instead of telling them to do things, do it with them. This creates a great bonding experience too!
Here's some examples:
- Brush your teeth with them.
- Sit in the bathroom with them and talk to them while they're taking a shower or bath (depending on age of course)
- Invite them to exercise with you. Get some cardio with a little game of tag!
- Homework time? Convince them you are doing homework too! Read a book next to them or even learn a new skill. Maybe catch up in the office from home. Start a blog 😉.
- Nap time? Lay down with them a few minutes or hey, a nap can't hurt right?
- Chores, get involved and you wash as they dry. Can't go wrong with folding laundry either!
Explain the importance of a good habit or routine.

I feel, hear, and experienced enough as a parent that, not enough explanation is truly given for the actions we do on a daily basis. I catch myself neglecting or taking for granted my daily activities. As parents, we are and should be some of the most important teachers!
Even if it isn't relevant or if you don't feel it is important, explain just about everything you are doing or encourage them to ask questions. Tell them why it's important to brush their teeth. If it isn't too scary, show them examples. Why do we take a bath? No one wants to be stinky right? Also, don't limit yourself to routines and habits! Explain what emergency sirens do, why we cover our sneezes, the importance of sun screen, etc.
