Learn To Set Up Your YouTube Homepage! (Here comes the fluff, skip to an easy outline)

Setting things up and getting discovered on any platform can be confusing, difficult, and even frustrating. Often times, there is little to no help, no practical tutorials, or no straight answers. I'm here to just give it to you straight!  Lets get to some short answers!

What is a YouTube homepage?

First of all, a YouTube home page is the very first page anyone sees when they click on your channel. By default, it's empty and misleading as it states "this channel doesn't have any content". However, you DO have content, hidden away in the following tabs like "videos" and "playlists". This is why your here.

Why is a YouTube home page important?

If you're a casual YouTube browser it isn't important but, if you are like me who wants to be discovered by others, viewed, and possibly trying to get on that bus to becoming a YouTube affiliate, then it is super important. In short, having a YouTube home page makes you easy to find, your content easy to find, and gives you a better online presence, than "This channel doesn't have any content", guaranteed!

There are many different options that you have at the tips of your fingers when making your YouTube channel more exciting. First and foremost, I would have to say the most important is featuring your content. After that, dressing up your YouTube channel with a brand, banner, and water mark. Lastly, get that profile going so people can find you on other platforms and know a little bit about you. Let's get started!

Starting point:
Before I go further do this: log in to YouTube 🠊 Click on your brand/icon on the top right 🠊 Click YouTube studio 🠊 Look for the wand (customization) on the left and click it.

This will take you to "Channel Customization". I will be going over the most important features to get you started, the rest can come later at your own leisure.

The Layout section (Featured sections)

The most important first step I would say is to feature your content and other YouTube channels you support. People like friends, family, other content creators you like or who may be super helpful 😉. By doing these steps, you clear up that pesky "This channel doesn't have any content" INSTANTLY!

1. Be sure to follow the starting point above

2. Be sure to be on the tab that says "Layout"

3. Scroll down where it says "featured sections"

5. Click on "+ add section" and click either a playlist or whichever option from that list that you would like to feature. I keep it simple and just add uploads, but for those who have more content, you may want to be specific about what they feature and in what order.

6. Optional: Out of the options you can select "Featured Channels" to feature your favorite content creators like yours truly! 😜

Also in layout: There are spotlight features to have a channel trailer or a featured video. For beginners it isn't really needed but in the long haul it is suggested. The features are just to advertise yourself to viewers, keep them updated, and to tell them what you are all about. It's extra icing on your YouTube cake!

The Branding Section

Branding is important because it adds a little visual pop to your channel, home page, and videos. To add some flair, there are three sections; Picture, Banner image, Video watermark.

Picture is your main logo. Some people make a custom logo and another popular option is a self portrait/photo of themselves. To me, this adds some professionalism to your channel and makes your channel pop out better when they browse through their subscriptions.

Banner image is what everyone sees at the top of your YouTube page. This one can be a little difficult. It suggests banner sizes but depending on the screen that is reviewing your home page, it will only show a portion of the full banner. A cell phone will only show the center, a computer will show the mid-to lower half, and a TV will show the entire banner. My suggestion: Make a fun full sized banner, but center your channel name and whatever else you want everyone to see. This will be the main focus for all platforms.

Video watermark is basically an icon or logo that will display for every video. Again, adds to that pro-feeling for viewers. It also creates an in-video clickable subscribe button and link to redirect viewers to your YouTube homepage.

The Basic Info Section

Last but not least, the basic info section. This is a section to show off by describing what your channel is about as well as adding all your other websites and social media. If you are a new creator, this is extremely important for discovery!
